Lazar and long-time friend Gene Huff ran the Desert Blast festival,<ref name=popbla /> an annual festival in the Nevada desert for [[pyrotechnics]] enthusiasts.<ref name=popbla>{{cite magazine |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WpVTOroeFJIC&pg=PA76 |title=Desert Blast |magazine=[[Popular Science]] |date=April 1996 |pages=76–79}}</ref><ref name=wirboo>{{cite news |url=https://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.12/desert.blast.html |title=Ka-Booom!! |magazine=Wired |date=December 1, 1994}}</ref> The festival started in 1987, but was only formally named in 1991.
