Goldwater was born in [[Phoenix, Arizona|Phoenix]] in what was then the [[Arizona Territory]], the son of Baron M. Goldwater and his wife, Hattie Josephine "JoJo" Williams. Goldwater's father was Jewish, but Goldwater was raised in his mother's [[Episcopal Church in the United States of America|Episcopal]] faith. Barry Goldwater is the most recent non-college graduate to be the nominee of a major political party in a presidential election.  Goldwater entered the family's business around the time of his father's death in 1930.
