Secret facilities may refer to facilities in which classified work takes place, or more commonly in the context of UAP, as black sites, or places that don't officially exist. Others take the form of Deep Underground Military Bases or even supposed off-world sites.

Types

Public Facing/White World

These are facilities in which classified work is performed, where the existence of the site itself is acknowledged. Some parts may even be accessible to the public. CIA Langley likely handles large volumes of compartmentalized HUMINT data on a daily basis, disclosure of which would cause exceptionally grave harm to our country and likely result in the death of covert assets. Yet the location itself is known, marked on maps, etc.

Unacknowledged/Grey

Installations in this category are not publicized but not neccesarily denied either. Much or all of the work and purpose of the location may be classified. Continuity of Government bunkers and private defense contractor facilities are two examples of the grey world.

Denied/Black Sites

Black Sites exist entirely outside of standard regulatory and bureaucratic control, and strive to be above the law of their home and host nation (when abroad). The powers charged with protecting these locations will use deception or any number of coercive techniques to suppress the unauthorized release of information. The existence of the site as well as any happening within is classified, compartmentalized and officially denied. Examples of black sites would be extraordinary rendition airfields, CIA prisons, covert purpose-built R&D complexes.

  • Area 51 (prior to 2013 - still "in the black" for all intents-and-purposes)
